Welcome to Hartlebury History Society. The
society was formed in 1996 when a committee was elected and
a constitution agreed, setting out the aims of the society.
These aims have remained as the focus for the present
society, the main ones being to promote and encourage
interest in the history of Hartlebury and it’s locality, to
organise a programme of speakers and visits to places of
interest, and to encourage research by members.
The society meets on the third Thursday
evening of the month at 7.30pm, in Hartlebury Village Hall,
usually with the exception of August, when there is an
‘outdoor’ meeting or visit to a place of interest. The
society has grown over it’s lifetime of thirteen plus years
and it has acquired a large number of items in it’s growing
archive, both documents relating to Hartlebury, it’s
buildings, people and surrounding area, and a library of
books which relate to the village and county as well as some
of general historic interest. The members are encouraged to
borrow anything from the archive which interests them and
the society is always ready to receive donations of suitable
materials. An archivist takes charge of this aspect of the
society.
Membership currently costs £6 per annum with
an extra £1.50 being paid at each meeting. A journal,
‘Discovery’, is published twice each year and is available
to non members at Hartlebury Post Office, members of the
society or at the monthly meetings. The cost is currently
£1.00 per copy.
Hartlebury
History Society in partnership with the Worcestershire
Historic and Archaeology Service, digitised the large,
fragile inclosure maps of Hartlebury, Stone, Elmley Lovett,
Areley Kings, Lower Mitton and Burlish Common. These huge
old maps together with the unwieldy apportionment documents
weredigitised and transferred onto the
County Council Geographical Information System (GIS). The
whole project was made possible by the generous grant from
the Local Heritage Initiative.
